When Is Pregnancy Tested After IVF?
Last updated:

After IVF treatment, we recommend taking the pregnancy test 12 days after the embryo transfer. Results can be obtained earlier, but to avoid confusion, a blood test should be done on day 12 after the embryo transfer. A blood test should be preferred because both the measured value and how it changes over time are important.
How is the pregnancy test done?
In IVF treatment, the days between the embryo transfer and the pregnancy test are a time of curiosity and impatience for the mother-to-be. The cells of the embryo placed in the uterus secrete a hormone called beta-hCG, and it takes 12 days for this hormone to reach a measurable level in the mother's blood. Since the hormone measured to diagnose pregnancy reaches a measurable level in the blood after 10-12 days, the most accurate time for the pregnancy test is day 12 after the transfer. After implantation, that is, once the embryo has attached, beta-hCG starts to rise in the blood, and the pregnancy result is learned on day 12 with a blood pregnancy test.
You do not need to fast for this test. Patients who cannot come to our clinic for the pregnancy test can have it done at any biochemistry laboratory where they are.
We invite patients with a positive pregnancy test for an ultrasound check 10 days later to confirm the gestational sac. Patients who live outside the city or travel abroad can also have these check-ups done where they are.
How is the week of pregnancy calculated after IVF?
In early pregnancy, the gestational week is calculated from the measurements of the embryo seen on ultrasound after the gestational sac has been detected.
Determining the gestational week early is very important both for estimating the expected due date and for planning pregnancy follow-up.
How is the due date calculated from the gestational week?
Pregnancy lasts approximately 280 days (40 weeks). Tracking the pregnancy in 'weeks' rather than in 'months', as is common in everyday speech, is more accurate for both doctors and mothers-to-be. For example, a pregnancy should be described as 26-27 weeks rather than 6.5 months.
