Common Causes of Male-Factor Infertility

Male factor plays a role, alone or alongside female factors, in a significant share of couples facing infertility. That's why our evaluation always includes both partners.
Semen Analysis Is the First Step
A semen analysis evaluates sperm count, motility, and shape. Results aren't finalized from a single sample; testing is repeated a few weeks apart when needed.
Common Causes
Varicocele (enlarged veins around the testicle), hormonal imbalances, past infections, genetic factors, and lifestyle habits — such as smoking, heat exposure, and stress — are among the most common causes.
Male-factor infertility is, in most cases, treatable or manageable within IVF treatment.
In some cases, surgery (such as varicocele repair) is the right path; in others, proceeding directly with IVF/ICSI is more appropriate. The decision is made together, based on test results and your overall situation.
- Initial evaluation with a semen analysis
- Hormonal and genetic testing when needed
- Screening for structural causes like varicocele
- A review of lifestyle factors
