The Differences Between IVF and IUI

One of the most common questions couples ask when they first visit our clinic is the difference between intrauterine insemination (IUI) and in vitro fertilization (IVF). Both are well-established fertility treatments, but they differ significantly in how they are performed and who they are suited for.

How IUI Works

In IUI, washed and concentrated sperm with the highest motility is placed directly into the uterus using a thin catheter, timed around ovulation. The procedure is painless and usually doesn't require anesthesia. Open fallopian tubes and sperm parameters above a certain threshold are prerequisites.

IUI is a less invasive first step, but it isn't the right option for every couple.

In IVF, the ovaries are stimulated with medication, mature eggs are retrieved in a brief procedure, and fertilized with sperm in the laboratory. The resulting embryos are observed for a few days before being transferred to the uterus. IVF is generally preferred when the tubes are blocked, sperm count is low, or IUI attempts haven't been successful.

IVF is typically recommended directly in the following situations:

  • Female age is over 35
  • Fallopian tubes are blocked
  • There is a significant male-factor issue
  • Three IUI attempts have not resulted in pregnancy

We decide which path is right for you together, after evaluating your ovarian reserve, the condition of your tubes, and your partner's sperm analysis.
